Germany is the world’s largest hop producer: with a share of around 35 percent of the global market, it reigns supreme. The news that hop cultivation in Germany is now recognized as intangible cultural heritage naturally sparked jubilation in the growing regions of Hallertau, Elbe-Saale, Spalt, Tettnang, and Bitburg, as the Association of German Hop Growers announced in its press release.

The recent entry into the Bavarian state register is based on the assessment of an independent panel of experts, which had clearly advocated for its inclusion.

Specialized knowledge spanning generations required

The decisive factor for this recognition is, above all, the extensive specialized knowledge surrounding the hop plant—from cultivation and care through harvesting to marketing. Furthermore, hop growing shapes the lives and daily routines of those involved in a unique way. Equally crucial is how this knowledge is passed down and what structures ensure that future generations can successfully continue hop cultivation.

In addition to economic and agronomic considerations, social and emotional factors also play an important role. Hop growing shapes the identity, way of life, and mindset of hop farmers, thereby distinguishing itself clearly from other agricultural sectors.

Economy, Science, and Living Culture: Hop Growing in Germany

The focus is not only on tradition, but above all on current practices. History serves as a foundation for understanding the contemporary significance of hop growing.

With its official designation, hop growing in Germany is now recognized as a multifaceted interplay of economy, science, and living culture.
